Merry Christmas Dad

$550.00

This painting is from a series of work I exhibited in Adelaide, in 2025. The series was exhibited under the name “Clang”

The works in this series were tongue in cheek reflections of the artist. They show light hearted humour and staring at the sun sincerity. This body of work reflected on a recent car accident I had, putting me in hospital for six days and leaving with a bad heart, and my experience as an artist practicing for over a decade. Resulting with work on themes of anxiety surrounding issues of the self, the body, urbanisation, climate, and artistry.

This painting is named after a poem that goes:

“Merry Christmas Dad, I’ll try and be good and do everything you ask.
Merry Christmas Dad, I remember you guys got me toothpaste, real toothpaste, with a pink cartoon shark on the packet. You told me I was big enough to use real toothpaste and I remember being proud, but also pretty scared.
Merry Christmas Dad, I remember you and mum watched me brush my teeth for the first time, getting dressed nice to go see a movie. I remember the toothpaste being so much less than the recommended size of a pea, because it was too strong for me.
Merry Christmas Dad, I don’t remember the movie, but it was a fancy theatre, like the capri, you know the old building at the intersection of Goodwood and Gilbert street. It was late in the evening and the floor was carpeted, patterned, and red. The walls were wall papered, also patterned, and red, with tall wooden pillars, stained ochre red.
Merry Christmas Dad, I can’t get my feet to reach the floor, I wore my big jacket and my breath is still cold, freezing. Could we do this again next week ?”
